Things to buy when you move

Okay, so your landlord finally approved your application and you're just hyped about moving into your new dream home. But other than filing for your address change with your new city, you noticed that you'll need new electrical appliances and furniture ( if you don't have any, that is! Duh! ). Most people buy new furniture at IKEA or Nitori, the Japanese version of the former:) Electrical appliances can be purchased at the following:

Yodobashi Camera
BIC Camera
Kojima Denki
Yamada Denki

And a lot other places...........

Or, you can buy second-hand items if you want to save on the costs. There are so many stores that specialise in second-hand furniture or electrical appliances. And you can buy them at 30 to 70% of the cost of buying them new, depending on their condition. Many of these places offer free delivery, so long you meet some criteria. But whether they offer free delivery or not, you should check and see if any kind of delivery is available. Otherwise, you'll need to hire a car or truck to deliver them to your new home.

Before you buy anything, we advise you to take measurements of the doors, hallway and elevator of your new home. If your new home doesn't have an elevator, you'll need to carry your stuff up the stairs. Most apartments built before 1985 or so probably won't have an elevator. Measure the breadth of the staircase and height of ceiling. We wouldn't want you weeping after noticing that your furniture wouldn't fit into your new room, consequently returning it to the second-hand shop. Also, most apartments have a place to install your washing machine, but not necessarily for a dryer. If your room is too small, you may find a place outside on the balcony. Don't forget to measure the inner dimensions of the pan. Keep in mind that many apartments don't come with any form of lighting equipment on the ceiling, meaning you will be required to purchase and install them on your own. Air conditioning/heating is widely considered standard equipment that comes with your new home. However, I'm not saying that your new home will definitely come with it. If you are looking for a room with multiple bedrooms, like say for a family, you might not find the A/C in all the bedrooms, meaning you'll have to install them on your own, or suffer from the heat or cold. It's true that an A/C can cost quite a sum that you're going to have to shell out from your savings. But it can be worth the investment. In addition to the cost of the A/C, you'll need to pay a separate installation fee.
Subscribing to your Internet provider can also be a hassle if you don't understand japanese. Depending on your desired connections, a portable Wifi would be enough, as you can take it with you when you go out.

WHERE TO SEE: Hachioji Castle ruins

If you like to enjoy outdoor activities, hiking in western Tokyo is a great idea. Most people don't know that Tokyo has its share of rich greenery and mountains. Mount Takao is also a popular destination. But with the summer heat, you may want to plan that trip after it cools down a bit. For history buffs, we recommend taking a hike to Hachioji Castle ruins, which about an hour train ride from central Tokyo.
And as the name suggests, that is where a castle once stood back in 1590. Hachioji Castle was owned by Hojo Ujiteru, a samurai who was at war with Toyotomi Hideyoshi's forces. The castle keep was located atop a mountain, a great vantage point for watching any enemy movements.
Unfortunately, Toyotomi's forces decided to attack the castle when Hojo Ujiteru and most of his forces were away in Odawara, leaving the castle poorly defended, despite the terrain protecting it. Eventually, Toyotomi managed to siege the castle and slaughter its residents. The women and kids refused to be captured alive and committed suicide by jumping into a river nearby. Legend has it the river was crimson red for three nights since the day the castle was sieged. The castle was eventually burned to the ground. Hojo Ujiteru would learn about the terrible incident and commit seppuku. Okay, enough with the history.
The link below provides in-depth details on how to get to Hachioji Castle. But beware! After sunset, the surrounding area is rumoured to be haunted by the spirits of the fallen residents. Whether you believe in ghosts or not is up to you. If you want to venture out at night for the sake of the thrill, do it at your own risk.

Current update.....

I've been pretty caught up by my job advertising apartments for the local community. I know it sounds like a lame excuse for not updating my blog and keeping the expat community up to date with the hottest info. Most expats tend to stay near central Tokyo for the sake of convenience, but end up paying an extortionate sum for rent. Depending on how long you stay in Japan, you may prefer a share house or furnished apartment over the usual apartments. But of course there's not much trouble finding a good room for a bargain so long you move away from central Tokyo. That is no way of saying it's an inconvenient place to live, as there are many shops and restaurants nearby. There actually are some expats that prefer living in the outskirts or suburbs, just to get away from the everyday bustling life of Tokyo. The only way to get good advice and find a good apartment is to find a trustworthy real estate agent. Most real estate agents only care about making money and getting as much contracts signed. They also tend to oversee what their clients really want.

It's true that many landlords or owners refuse to lend their property to foreigners due to their biased beliefs that they are rude or tend to break the local rules. But this is just utter crap, as I've known and even hung out with many people who are courteous and observe the local customs and rules. The media also tends to portray foreign people in a similar way, further giving off a bad impression based on biased belief. However, there are landlords who are open-minded and don't mind lending their apartments to foreigners. But it can still be a challenge to find foreigner friendly apartments, as most ads don't mention it. From my experience, I've seen ads that charge foreigners an extortionate sum for insurance. The "extra" fee can range from 1 to 2 month's rent worth or key money. This does not mean that all landlords or owners change an extra sum for foreigners.

On another note, the population is declining and they are building new apartments everywhere at ever increasing speed. Sometimes you wonder why the hell they do that when they'll end up with more vacant apartments. But that's what's been driving down rent in certain areas, even in central Tokyo. As mentioned in my earlier blogs, you are expected to shell out 4 to 5 month's worth of rent when you're moving into a new home. But that is gradually changing, as landlords and homeowners are becoming desperate to look for a renter in this world of ever-increasing vacant rooms. Most owners used to charge 1 month's worth of deposit and key money respectively. Until about 10 years ago, 2 + 2 months worth used to be the norm. Now there are apartments on the market that don't charge any deposit or key money. Gotta love the buyers market economy, eh?

WHERE TO EAT: Gonbei Omusubi

You might have thought onigiri, or rice balls, are only sold convenience stores, or made at the comfort of your Japanese friend's parent's home. There are some restaurants that serve them as a side dish. But did you know there's a shop that specializes in onigiri? Omusubi Gombei has a chain of shops near every major JR station. Most are located within the station building. But no ticket purchase is necessary:)

What makes Omusubi Gombei so special is that they serve a wide variety of onigiri, even the rice comes in various assortment. Think about an ice cream parlor that sells 100 assortments of ice cream rather than just 3. Of course you have the option of eating in or take-out. Great for a snack or a small meal.
One word or warning: if you ever frequent these onigiri joints, chances are, you'll get addicted to them!
